Armenian Parliament is discussing the candidature of Arman Tatoyan, the deputy minister of defense, for Ombudsperson of Armenia these days.
Levon Zurabyan, the Head of the Armenian National Congress (ANC), said his party will boycott the voting, as the decision to appoint not to elect the Ombudsperson was made at the president's office. He is sure that democracy in Armenia is controlled and there is no freedom of speed, in fact.
"All this is the facade of democracy that conceals the authoritarian regime, totally controls elections, and do not let the true opposition to the parliament. The party that nominates you will be controlling your actions. You will be free as long as you pump into the interests of the person that decided to appoint you. You should choose to serve either for democracy or for Serzh Sargsyan. If you choose the first, ANC will be supporting your actions," he said.
Naira Zohrabyan, the leader of the Prosperous Armenia Party, said the opposition will be trying to turn Tatoyan into a "radical Rambo," while the authorities will try to turn him into a human rights defender softly criticizing various state agencies. Zohrabyan said she would not support Tatoyan's candidature, as he was nominated by the ruling party. Meantime, MPs from her party, Vahan Babayan and Mikael Melkumyan have expressed their confidence and support to Tatoyan.
A member of ARFD party faction Artsvik Minasyan said the faction will vote for Tatoyan, as it is confident in his frankness and possibilities.
Heghine Bisharyan, the head of Orinats Yerkir Party faction, said the members of the party are free to make their choice.
Oppositionist MPs Alexander Arzumanyan and Nikol Pashinyan harshly criticized the method of nominating the candidate, but supported Tatoyan anyway.
Tevan Poghosyan, a member of Heritage Party, said he trusts Tatoyan but will not vote for him, as he supported another nominee for the given post.
The close voting will over at 2:30pm of February 23.
