On Feb 6, Armenian Defense Minister Seyran Ohanyan introduced Major-General Armen Ghahramanyan, the new head of the Vazgen Sargsyan Military Academy, to the Academy's staff.
The press service of the Armenian Defense Ministry has told ArmInfo that Ohanyan hopes the personnel changes and the introduction of new educational standards will allow liquidating all the flaws and evil phenomena which resulted in the tragic incident with cadet Haykaz Barseghyan. Ohanyan also expressed hope that the Military Academy's image will shortly be restored.
To note, ex-Head of the Academy Martin Karapetyan was dismissed following the murder of cadet Haykaz Barseghyan. Furthermore, the minister said that the three deputy heads of the Academy would also be fired. He added that the entire leadership of the Academy, including the heads of the chairs, would be dismissed.
The body of Haykaz Barseghyan was found hanged from a chin-up bar on the sports ground at his military unit on Jan 29 morning. Chief Military Investigation Department of the Investigation Committee has initiated a criminal case based on Article 104.7.2. of the Criminal Code of Armenia (murder committed by a group of persons or organized group). Four cadets of the Academy face murder charges: Movses Azaryan, Norik Sahakyan. Vacheh Sahakyan, and Gnel Tevosyan. All the four have been arrested.
On January 31, the minister called extraordinary meeting over Barseghyan's murder. Ohanyan said the murder of the cadet was a stab in the back of the men who guard the country's borders day and night.
