ArmInfo. The failure of the mission to adopt a new Constitution for Armenia could raise the question of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's resignation. This opinion was expressed by political scientist Benjamin Matevosyan, responding to the searches of the homes of Strong Armenia party leader Samvel Karapetyan and the head of the Strong Armenia parliamentary faction, Narek Karapetyan.
The expert linked them to a new act of coercion against the opposition to adopt the "Aliyev Constitution." "Next, there will be criminal cases against the relatives of opposition MPs." "And the final chord will be the encirclement of the parliament building on the day of the referendum vote," Matevosyan wrote on his Telegram channel.
In the current situation, according to the expert, the Armenian opposition has a unique opportunity to recoup the heavy political losses of past years. "If the opposition forces manage to show resilience, resist threats, blackmail, and administrative and criminal pressure, and prevent the referendum from being called, this will become an absolutely legitimate pretext to demand the resignation of Armenia's leadership and the holding of early elections." Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's own logic is working against him: since his mission, as he himself says, cannot be completed without a new Constitution, the failure of this process must mean the inevitable departure of his team from governing the state," Matevosyan emphasized.
The political scientist believes that political changes in Armenia's leadership could also open the country's chance for a real restart of the negotiation process with Baku, but with the involvement of reliable international mediators and based on the restoration of a full-fledged regional balance of power.
But that is a long way off. For now, we just have to wait and see. However, the examples of Armenia's second president, Robert Kocharyan, and the Catholicos of All Armenians prove that even under enormous pressure, it is possible to maintain a clear political position," Matevosyan concluded.
It should be recalled that the press secretary of the Strong Armenia party Aghavni Sukiasyan reported that investigators from the Investigative Committee of Armenia have been conducting searches since early this morning at the homes of Strong Armenia bloc leader Samvel Karapetyan and Strong Armenia parliamentary faction leader Narek Karapetyan. She noted that searches are also being conducted at other addresses associated with Karapetyan's family. Later, Investigative Committee spokesperson Kima Avdalyan reported that searches are being conducted simultaneously at 65 addresses.
Pashinyan previously stated that if the parliamentary opposition opposes the adoption of the new Constitution, the ruling majority will begin to generate public pressure. He also noted that "the authorities may formulate a proposal for the parliamentary opposition regarding the new Constitution that they will be unable to refuse."
