ArmInfo. The issue of the frequent use of pretrial detention is within the purview of a previously established interdepartmental commission. This was stated by RA Minister of Justice Srbuhi Galyan at a joint meeting of the National Assembly committees on November 3.
According to her, this is the reason for the current situation in the country's judicial system. The minister noted that at the end of last year, the number of convicted persons was lower than the number of arrested persons. A significant amount of work is being done to shift this proportion in favor of arrested citizens. Moreover, Galyan continued, this issue is presented as a problem in international reports.
The minister reported that currently, there are 1,718 convicted persons and 1,522 arrested persons in the country, meaning there is a trend toward a change in this proportion. Similar figures have not been seen in the republic over the past five years. This also indicates an increase in the number of judicial decisions issued and their entry into force.
Galyan also reported that repair work is underway at virtually all penal institutions. This work has been somewhat slower at the Artik Correctional Facility, but this does not mean that it will not be completed by the end of the year. Overall, repair work has been completed at more than 170 facilities under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Justice.
