ArmInfo. Despite statements from his legal team regarding the health of former State Revenue Committee (SRC) head Gagik Khachatryan and the steps being taken, he remains in custody. This was stated in a statement received by ArmInfo by the former SRC head's legal team.
The statement reminds that the next court hearing in Khachatryan's case will be held on October 30 at 2:00 PM. It is noted that this will take place after the expiration of his second pretrial detention period. "Khachatryan was illegally arrested on September 2, 2026, and has been in custody for two months. He has numerous health issues that are incompatible with the conditions of detention. Despite the lawyers' statements regarding Khachatryan's health and the steps being taken, on October 29, a decision was made to extend his detention for another two months," the statement reads.
Khachatryan's defense noted that at the previous court hearing, the former head of the State Revenue Committee of Armenia notified the court in writing of his desire to be present in person at the court hearings. "At the same time, the court noted that the issue of the accused's participation and waiving this right is being raised because, according to documents submitted by the defense, transportation to court and attendance at the hearings causes Khachatryan pain. The court noted that issues of medical care and detention conditions are not within its jurisdiction, as he is under arrest in connection with another criminal case, and invited the defense to discuss this issue. The defense was forced to waive Khachatryan's right to participate in the hearings, emphasizing that his presence at the court hearings is essential for his defense. The charges relate to alleged actions he committed while in office, and he frequently draws the defense's attention to important issues and circumstances. Therefore, his participation is necessary for a full and effective defense," the lawyers stated.
Khachatryan's defense also discussed his health. Specifically, they recalled that Khachatryan's lawyers attempted to secure the necessary treatment in a penal institution or permission to transfer him to a civilian hospital. "However, no significant medical intervention has been performed to date, and the lawyers' inquiries to the SNCO "Center for Penitentiary Medicine" of the Armenian Ministry of Justice have received evasive responses. Due to bureaucratic obstacles, a visit by a German doctor who had previously operated on Khachatryan was also initially denied. During the visit, which was organized after numerous difficulties, the doctor recorded a sharp deterioration in his health and ordered the patient to be immediately sent to a civilian hospital for treatment," the lawyers for the former SRC head summarized.
As a reminder, by a decision of the Prosecutor General's Office on August 29, 2026, the criminal case opened on June 7, 2026, against the former SRC head within the framework of proceedings being reviewed by the Investigative Committee was amended and supplemented, and a new public criminal prosecution was initiated. Khachatryan was detained on September 1 after security forces conducted searches of his and his son's apartments, as well as the offices and branches of 21 companies affiliated with them. These actions were carried out as part of criminal proceedings related to the acceptance of bribes on an especially large scale and money laundering on an especially large scale. On September 2, he was placed under arrest for two months.
On September 1, the lawyers for the former head of the State Revenue Committee of Armenia posted a video showing the ailing Khachatryan literally being dragged out of bed and placed on a stretcher to be taken to court. In court, the former minister was forced onto chairs, which his legal team characterized as further torture. On September 10, lawyer Yerem Sargsyan reported that the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) had sent a request to the Armenian government regarding a complaint filed by Gagik Khachatryan's defense.
