ArmInfo. At the request of the Ombudsman of Armenia, Anahit Manasyan, representatives of the Office of the Human Rights Defender (HRD) visited the Nubarashen Penitentiary, where they met with inmate Ashot Badalyan, who has been on hunger strike for 44 days.
According to the Office of the Human Rights Defender (HRD), during the visit, individual conversations were held with inmates, including Badalyan. "The issues of ensuring the rights of individuals, their health, the provision of necessary medical care, and proper medical supervision were discussed. While going on a hunger strike is a human right, representatives of the Human Rights Defender's Office called on Badalyan to end it, given its duration and the potential negative consequences for his health," the Office of the Human Rights Defender of Armenia concluded.
It should be noted that Badalyan declared his hunger strike on September 16, 2026. He is the father of three minor children. The convict began the hunger strike in protest of the delays in his trial. He demands a fair trial. Badalyan's lawyers noted during a press conference in Yerevan that there is evidence indicating that Badalyan shot the man in self-defense. The man came to his home with a gun and a grenade.
It is noteworthy that Badalyan has been in custody in Nubarashen Prison for over a year on murder charges, but a final verdict has not yet been issued.
