ArmInfo. UN Secretary-General António Guterres will visit Yerevan to participate in the leaders' summit preceding the 17th session of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP-17).
According to the UN press service, during his visit, the Secretary-General will hold bilateral meetings with Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan and Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. The UN chief will address the opening ceremony of the leaders' summit. Guterres will remind participants that the world is shaken by conflicts and natural disasters.
He will note that biodiversity conservation is not an isolated issue and emphasize the interconnectedness of the crises: progress in resolving each depends on success in overcoming the others. Addressing governments and the financial community, he will call on all to act with the urgency required by this moment.
Joined by COP17 President Hambardzum Matevosyan, Armenian Minister of Environment, and Astrid Schomaker, Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity, Guterres will participate in a press event to launch the "State of Biodiversity Action" report, the first global assessment of the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
The Secretary-General will also hold meetings and discussions with civil society representatives, including youth organizations.
The seventeenth session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity will be held in Yerevan from 19 to 30 October. It will bring together representatives of governments, international organizations, and academia from around the world.
