ArmInfo. The National Assembly of Armenia ratified the Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Armenia and the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity to hold the UN Conference on Biodiversity (COP17) in Yerevan from October 19 to 30, 2026.
The draft was presented by Robert Abisogomonyan, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade of the Republic of Armenia, during an extraordinary session of Parliament on October 12. He noted that this agreement regulates the organizational and legal framework for COP17 and clearly delineates the roles and responsibilities of the parties, including financial, legal, administrative, and organizational ones.
The agreement also regulates the venue for the events, the provision of necessary infrastructure, technical and communications equipment, the organization of media work, the reception of international guests and delegations, their provision of transportation and medical services, and security.
Three key sessions of the Convention's bodies will be held in parallel in Yerevan as part of a single organizational process: the 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 17) - the main platform of the Convention on Biological Diversity, dedicated to the first global review of progress on the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Framework for Biological Diversity. The 12th meeting of the Conference of the Parties, serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Cartagena Protocol (CP-MOP-12) is the session regulating biosafety and the movement of living modified organisms.
The 6th meeting of the Conference of the Parties, serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Nagoya Protocol (NP-MOP-6), is the session on access to genetic resources and the equitable sharing of benefits arising from their utilization.
As a reminder, the Armenian government approved the draft law at its meeting on October 8, 2026.
