ArmInfo. While fares for Yerevan's public transportation have been standardized, the problem of waiting for transport, which can take between 20 and 40 minutes, remains a pressing issue. Mayor Tigran Avinyan stated this during a working meeting of the mayor's office on October 12.
He noted that this is unacceptable, especially given the city's monitoring and data collection system, which allows for solutions.
In this regard, Yerevan Deputy Mayor Suren Grigoryan noted that the problem is not so much a shortage of buses as the need for dedicated bus lanes. He noted that even with a full-fledged bus fleet, if the lane issue is not resolved, traffic will remain difficult, and waiting and travel times will not be reduced in any way. At the same time, the Deputy Mayor announced that a tender for the purchase of 171 new buses would soon be announced.
Continuing on this topic, Avinyan noted that separate bus lanes currently have a certain effect, but only on specific corridors. In this vein, he emphasized that the lanes should be provided on all major routes.
"By 2030, we must achieve a situation where public transport travel times during peak hours are reduced by at least 30%. And we must create conditions for people with cars to switch to public transport," the Mayor said.
At the same time, he explained that the introduction of separate lanes should be carried out in several stages. The Mayor instructed those responsible to resolve this issue within 2-3 years. Specifically, he noted that bus lanes will appear not only on the right side of the road, but also on the central part. "That is, we will move on to reconstructing the streets," he said.
