ArmInfo. RA National Assembly Speaker Ruben Rubinyan approved the composition of the investigative commission to investigate the "crisis in the church."
According to the RA National Assembly press service, the commission includes seven MPs from the ruling Civil Contract faction. Representatives of two opposition factions, Strong Armenia and Armenia, refused to participate in its work. The commission will be headed by Arman Yeghoyan, former head of the NA Committee on European Integration. MPs Eduard Aghajanyan, Taron Chakhoyan, Arpine Davoyan, Alkhas Ghazaryan, and Tsovinar Vardanyan and Gor Arshakyan.
Previously, a decision was made to approve the composition of the commission, which was to consist of 11 parliamentarians: 7 from the ruling faction, 3 from the Strong Armenia faction, and 1 from the Armenia faction, but the latter declined to participate.
It should be noted that tensions between the Armenian authorities and the Armenian Apostolic Church escalated in the fall of 2026, leading to open confrontation. The Office of the Prime Minister of Armenia published an official report titled "On the Crisis that arose in the Armenian Apostolic Church as a Result of the Activities of the De facto Leader of the Church and Several High-Ranking Clergy, and Ways to Resolve It." The report accuses the church leadership of political destructiveness and the crisis. The Armenian Parliament (with 62 votes from the ruling Civil Contract party) approved the creation of a special investigative commission on issues related to the Armenian Apostolic Church. It is headed by MP Arman Yeghoyan. Opposition factions (Armenia and Strong Armenia) called this move unconstitutional and declared a boycott of the commission's work.
The Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin called the report and the authorities' actions unconstitutional and illegal, assessing them as political revenge and direct, unacceptable state interference in the internal affairs of a religious institution. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and his supporters claim that the Armenian Apostolic Church has been "captured" and that its activities require institutional change and liberation from the influence of certain forces.
