ArmInfo. Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko expressed hope that Armenia will assume the CIS chairmanship in 2029. He made this statement during his speech at a restricted-attendance meeting of CIS leaders in Turkmenistan.
The Belarusian leader called Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev's decision to assume the chairmanship for the first time in 2028 a new round of development for the CIS.
"This is undoubtedly a historic moment. I hope Armenia will also decide to assume this honorable function in accordance with the rotation in 2029," added Alexander Lukashenko, as quoted by the Belarusian leader's press service.
The Belarusian President also thanked his Uzbek counterpart, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, for Uzbekistan's agreement to assume the CIS chairmanship in 2027. "I am confident that our Uzbek friends will fulfill this mission with dignity, as always," the head of state said.
Alexander Lukashenko is confident that each country will give new impetus to the work of the CIS. "Belarus will provide you with maximum assistance and will actively participate in all processes," the President assured.
He wished the summit participants optimism, determination, and new achievements in their work for the benefit of the Commonwealth countries.
Azerbaijan and Armenia have long abstained from chairing the CIS due to the conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh.
