ArmInfo. Gevorg Nersisyan, the brother of Catholicos of All Armenians Garegin II, and his nephew, Hambardzum Nersisyan, have been found guilty of obstructing the election campaign. The corresponding decision was made by the Armavir Regional Court, chaired by Gevorg Manukyan.
The brother and nephew of the Catholicos of All Armenians have been charged under Article 211 of the Criminal Code of Armenia (obstructing the exercise of electoral rights, the work of a polling station, or the free expression of will of election participants).
Having found them guilty, the court ordered the next hearing on the case to be held on October 15. The court will also consider the measure of restraint for this act.
As a reminder, on November 2, 2025, lawyer Ara Zohrabyan reported the arrest of Gevorg Nersisyan and Hambardzum Nersisyan. They were charged with hooliganism and obstructing election campaigning. On November 3, the court ordered a two-month pretrial detention for Gevorg Nersisyan and a one-month pretrial detention for Hambardzum Nersisyan. These pretrial detentions were subsequently extended. On February 18, 2026, the Armavir Regional Court of First Instance changed the pretrial detention measures for the brother and nephew of His Holiness Karekin II, Catholicos of All Armenians. Instead of pretrial detention, the court ordered house arrest for three months, bail of 1 million drams each, and a ban on leaving their place of residence without permission. Furthermore, the court limited their contact with only close relatives and lawyers. The pretrial detention measure was later changed to administrative supervision.
Lawyer Ara Zohrabyan published a video recording of the incident in connection with this, noting that there was no hooliganism, much less the obstruction of campaigning attributed to his clients. Independent human rights activists believe that the Armenian authorities are attempting to pressure Garegin II and force him to voluntarily leave the Mother See of Etchmiadzin.
