ArmInfo. Lawyer Ara Zohrabyan warns of an alarming demographic picture in Armenia in recent years.
In his Facebook post, he shared statistical data on marriages and divorces in the country for 2022-2025, noting that they provide cause for serious reflection.
According to him, according to statistics, in 2022, 16,795 marriages were registered in Armenia, with 4,525 divorces - 26.9%; in 2023 - 16,330 marriages and 4,525 divorces - 27.5%; in 2024 - 15,324 marriages and 4,689 divorces - 30.5%. In 2025, there were 13,821 marriages and 4,881 divorces—35.3%.
Zohrabyan noted that in 2025, compared to 2022, the number of marriages decreased by 17.7%, while the number of divorces increased by 7.9%.
At the same time, as the lawyer noted, the registered number of abortions, including spontaneous abortions, was: in 2022—11,314; in 2023—10,666; in 2024—10,824; in 2025—10.
450.
"A total of 43,254 cases over four years." Although the 2025 figure is lower than the 2022 figure, the number of registered cases continues to exceed 10,000 annually. These figures also include abortions for therapeutic reasons and do not include unregistered abortions," he noted.
Zohrabyan emphasized that at least 511,522 abortions were registered in Armenia between 1991 and 2025. Moreover, this figure does not include data for 1998, which is not included in the published statistical database.
"This is an alarming demographic picture. Relevant government agencies and organizations, as well as specialists working in these fields and opposition political forces, must comprehensively study and identify the causes of these trends and assess their social, economic, medical, and other factors. "It's necessary not only to discuss the consequences but also to develop and implement specific measures aimed at addressing the causes, including strengthening families, encouraging marriage and fertility, and reducing the number of abortions. "Demography isn't just numbers. It's the country's future," Zohrabyan concluded.
