Narek Karapetyan: The ruling party`s lack of a 2/3 majority in parliament gives the opposition more opportunities to organize impeachment

The ruling Civil Contract party's lack of a two-thirds majority in the National Assembly of Armenia significantly changes the situation and gives the opposition the opportunity to organize impeachment. Narek Karapetyan, head of the Strong Armenia parliamentary faction, stated this on September 22.

According to him, there were previously several ways to launch a street fight, but back then the opposition faced a serious problem: it was underrepresented in parliament. "There was no significant opposition representation in parliament back then. Meanwhile, the ruling party's lack of a two-thirds majority in the National Assembly of Armenia significantly changes the situation. "Because this provides an opportunity to organize impeachment, which hasn't existed before, or to use other tools to remove the current leadership from power," the politician explained.

Overall, the faction leader believes that the support their force received during the latest parliamentary elections was unprecedented in the history of the Armenian opposition. "Compared to the previous elections, support has grown by 80%. It's simply that Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan ended up with more votes, contrary to all logic, since for the first time the authorities used administrative resources so massively," Karapetyan noted.

Speaking about the forces that, following the vote count, did not enter parliament, the politician noted that they, in turn, must take responsibility for the current situation in the country. Karapetyan noted that their political force warned extra-parliamentary forces that they lacked the resources to enter the legislative body and that their votes would be dispersed, effectively going to Pashinyan's team.

As a reminder, following the results of the regular parliamentary elections in Armenia held on June 7, 2026, the Civil Contract party had a 3/5 majority, which allows it to pass constitutional laws and make appointments. However, the party lacks the 2/3 majority necessary to directly amend the Armenian Constitution.
