Lawyer: Criminal case against former MP Martun Grigoryan sent to court

The preliminary investigation into the criminal case against political figure and member of the National Assembly of Armenia of several convocations Martun Grigoryan has been completed, and the case has been sent to court. This was stated in a statement by Martun Grigoryan's Defense Group, published by lawyer Arsen Babayan on his Facebook page.

It is noted that the first court hearing, during which the issue of overturning the illegal arrest imposed on Grigoryan will be considered, will take place on September 17, 2026, at 4:00 PM in the Anti-Corruption Court of Armenia, presided over by Judge Levon Petrosyan. The lawyer recalled that Grigoryan is accused of allegedly violating the ban on charity during electoral processes. "The criminal case against Martun Grigoryan has been sent to court. Grigoryan denies the fabricated charges brought against him. "During an open trial, the defense will fully prove his innocence," Babayan noted.

Regarding the arrest imposed on the former deputy, he noted that the defense is stating the following: the case primarily presents the groundless argument for obstruction of proceedings. "For example, Martun Grigoryan was arrested on August 14, 2026, almost three months after the criminal case was initiated. The arrest was based on the abstract possibility of obstruction of proceedings, while Grigoryan was aware of the criminal prosecution against him throughout this entire time and made no attempt to interfere with the investigation. "Both the European Court of Human Rights and Armenian courts have repeatedly noted that, in the context of a lengthy investigation, the risk of obstruction must be based on concrete facts, not assumptions," Babayan stated.

Furthermore, the lawyer pointed out the inconsistent behavior of the body conducting the investigation. As Babayan explained, during the consideration of the arrest petition, the body conducting the investigation informed the court that the arrest was due to the need to conduct numerous investigative actions.

"However, the very next day after Grigoryan's arrest, the completion of the preliminary investigation was announced. The preventive measure chosen against him in the form of detention does not serve to ensure the normal course of the investigation and proper procedural conduct, but rather serves as a punishment, which is prohibited by Armenian law and international conventions." The defense team will consistently utilize all domestic and international legal instruments to establish the illegality of the actions taken against Martun Grigoryan, prove his innocence, and promptly lift the pretrial detention measure," the lawyer concluded.

As a reminder, Martun Grigoryan was detained on August 13 as part of a criminal case initiated by the Anti-Corruption Committee of Armenia regarding election-related crimes. On August 14, a court ordered his pretrial detention for two months.
