Zakharova: Russia ready to discuss with Armenia the prospects for expanding military cooperation as part of a review of bilateral ties

Arminfo.  Russia is ready to discuss with Armenia the prospects for expanding military cooperation as part of the inventory of bilateral ties outlined by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.  Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova stated this during a briefing on September 15.

"We proceed from the fact that traditional cooperation in this area between Moscow and Yerevan, as well as the regular operation of common mechanisms, meets the interests of our countries," she said.

Zakharova added that the Russian military base stationed in Gyumri is one of the key elements of the security architecture of both Armenia and the South Caucasus as a whole.  "Especially since no tangible alternative is currently in sight. The presence of the Russian contingent in Armenia is regulated by relevant bilateral agreements, and for our part, we intend to comply with them. And we expect the official Yerevan to take a similar approach," Zakharova said.

The Russian military base has been stationed in Armenia in accordance with an interstate treaty dated 1995. In 2010, amendments were made to the document, under which the term of its presence on the territory of Armenia was extended from the initial 25 years to 49 years, until 2044.
