Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly: Maintaining a Russian base in Armenia is quite expensive

ArmInfo.  During the military aggression against Armenia in 2022, no interference from the Russian military base was observed. This was stated by Vice Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia Vahagn Aleksanyan at a briefing on September 15.

According to him, the base was unable to take concrete steps to stop this aggression against the Republic of Armenia. In the context of the Russians taking no concrete steps to protect the territorial integrity of the Armenian state during the military operations, speculation continues in the republic itself regarding the advisability of preserving it in the country.  "Whether it exists or not, I believe you all felt it. How can one not recall the words of Vardan Ghukasyan (former mayor of Gyumri - ed.)  "That those who are against the union of Russia and Belarus are sons of bitches. "Our colleagues from the opposition bloc are also speaking with precisely these 'national' views," Vahagn Aleksanyan stated, adding that maintaining the Russian base in Armenia is quite expensive.

Responding to a question about Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin's statement that Moscow had not received any requests from Yerevan to withdraw the Russian military base, Aleksanyan noted that government agencies had also not received any communications regarding Russia's readiness to withdraw its military base. Nevertheless, as the deputy speaker noted, the Armenian side is ready to discuss with Russia both the issue of its preservation and withdrawal. In any case, as Vahagn Aleksanyan emphasized, maintaining the Russian base is quite expensive for the Armenian side. As an example, he cited the company "Electric Networks of Armenia", which was charging extra money for electricity. "All these issues, according to him, are subject to discussion," the parliamentarian noted, finding interesting the idea proposed by the National Assembly deputy from the ruling party Vilen Gabrielyan about the possibility of increasing the fee for the placement of the base in the event of an increase in the cost of gas.
