Deputy Foreign Minister of Armenia spoke about the country’s preparations for COP17 on the sidelines of the 32nd OSCE Economic and Environmental Forum

ArmInfo. Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Armenia Robert Abisoghomonyan, speaking at a session held as part of the concluding meeting of the 32nd OSCE Economic and Environmental Forum in Prague, presented the main priorities and vision of the Armenian presidency of the 17th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP17), highlighting the complementary role of science and diplomacy in addressing global environmental challenges.

As reported by the press service of Armenia’s Foreign Ministry, Abisoghomonyan underscored the importance of scientific data and expert knowledge in policymaking and decision-making processes aimed at conserving biodiversity, noting that science can contribute to a deeper assessment of existing and emerging risks, as well as to forecasting them and developing effective response measures.

Speaking about the preparatory process for COP17, he emphasized the inclusive approach adopted by the Armenian presidency, aimed at the full and meaningful participation of governments, international organizations, the scientific and academic communities, civil society, youth, women, Indigenous peoples and local communities, as well as the private sector.

Presenting the events planned as part of COP17, which will take place in Yerevan in October, Abisoghomonyan mentioned the Leaders’ Summit entitled "Leaders for Nature," which is expected to result in the adoption of the political declaration "Yerevan Call for Action," reaffirming the key role of biodiversity in ensuring sustainable development, food security, climate resilience and well-being.

The diplomat also emphasized the importance of the First Global Review of Collective Progress in implementing the goals and targets of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. It was noted that the review will provide an opportunity to assess the progress achieved and identify existing gaps, as well as outline areas requiring greater efforts.

Abisoghomonyan also touched upon Armenia’s initiatives within the framework of COP17, aimed at expanding positive environmental incentives, promoting the exchange of experience in effective area-based conservation measures, developing biodiversity monitoring systems using new technologies, and strengthening international cooperation in protecting mountain and freshwater ecosystems.

In conclusion, he reaffirmed Armenia’s readiness to continue cooperation with OSCE participating States and international partners in order to ensure ambitious, forward-looking and practical outcomes within the framework of COP17 in Yerevan.
