The criminal prosecution against political scientist Alen Gevondyan has been terminated – the Investigative Committee of Armenia.

ArmInfo. The criminal prosecution against political scientist Alen Gevondyan has been dropped. The political scientist himself announced this on his Facebook page, publishing the corresponding decision of the Investigative Committee (IC) of Armenia.

The political scientist was charged for a Facebook post in which he criticized the Armenian authorities. It was deemed a post "calling for the seizure of power in the country and the overthrow of the constitutional order." The case was dismissed under Article 12, Part 1, Clause 1 of the current Criminal Procedure Code of Armenia (dismissal of a criminal case if the person did not commit the act with which they are accused – ed.).

Member of the Armenian Parliament from the opposition Armenia faction, Gegham Manukyan, reacting to this decision, wondered who would ultimately be held accountable for all these actions. As Manukyan recalled, the case against YSU lecturer and political scientist Alen Ghevondyan was opened back in June. "According to the Investigative Committee, Ghevondyan allegedly publicly called for the seizure of power and the violent overthrow of the constitutional order using information and communication technologies on his Facebook accounts. A preventive measure in the form of administrative supervision was chosen against him. Ghevondyan was prohibited from publishing, visiting public gatherings, and communicating via social media. And after about three months, the investigator "realized" there was no crime. All this time, most of Gevondyan's "academic" and university colleagues remained silent. But they remained silent temporarily, until the "Nikolovsky" law enforcement system knocked on their door early in the morning," the deputy wrote.
