ArmInfo. As of September 1, 2026, Armenia's regional comprehensive schools will come under the direct control of the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports (MECS). This was announced by Zhanna Andreasyan, head of the MESCS, at a press conference in Yerevan on August 28, presenting the ministry's programs and priorities for the 2026-2027 academic year.
According to the minister, the new governance model implies a clearer delineation of powers between the ministry and territorial administration bodies or the governor's office. "In particular, substantive issues related to the educational process will be under the responsibility and control of the Ministry. Meanwhile, administrative and business matters and procedures related to relevant transactions will be transferred to the governors' offices," Andreasyan explained.
According to the minister, extensive preparatory work has been carried out to implement the new model, including in the area of digitalization. "I am confident that this will enable us to transition to new standards in the near future and ensure the further development of the general education management system. This is expected to lead to changes in the Ministry's work with educational institutions. In particular, the scope and nature of interaction with the regions will change. In this regard, structural changes are planned within the Ministry, the first stage of which has already been approved," Andreasyan noted.
At the same time, the head of the republic's Ministry of Education, Science, and Culture, clarified that the main objective of these changes is to revise the content of work processes and implement digital solutions. "Our goal isn't to carry out any mechanical actions. It's about revising the content of processes and increasing their efficiency through digitalization. This is precisely why we intend to carry out extensive work in the digital sphere as well," the minister concluded.
