ArmInfo. Refusing to recognize the enclaves as part of Azerbaijani territory would amount to a declaration of war against that state. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated this at a briefing on August 27.
According to him, Armenia's 29,743 square kilometers of territory is internationally recognized. This territory does not include the three enclaves, which cannot be said about Artsvashen. "If Armenia recognizes these enclaves as part of its territory, this means that the country's total area is no longer 29,743 square kilometers, but, for example, 29,755 square kilometers, which would amount to a direct declaration of war on Azerbaijan. This significantly increases the potential for conflict. Despite the opposition's claims of yet another betrayal, territorial surrender, and so on, we must ask ourselves why the Armenian authorities are taking this step. Are we masochists? This is being done not to manage the danger, but to neutralize it," Nikol Pashinyan stated.
He added that there are forces both within Armenia and beyond its borders that seek to destroy the established peace in order to escalate the situation. "I'm trying to ease this tension so there's no escalation in this matter," the prime minister said, adding that enclaves are currently not an issue in relations with Azerbaijan, although border delimitation is. "If we don't talk about Karki, it means we're giving up the occupied territories in the Jermuk region. This is the principle of the conflict. This 'nerve' has already been removed; the topic of enclaves and exclaves is the last topic around which a plan to destroy peace could be built. There are no discussions right now," Pashinyan noted.
This case, we are talking about three enclaves located within Armenia: Tigranashen (Karki), Barkhudarli, and Upper Voskepar (Yukhary Askipara). Armenia, for its part, insists on resolving the issue of the village of Artsvashen, which is under Azerbaijani occupation.
