ArmInfo. The Armenian authorities' statements about their intention to apply for membership in the European Union are contrary to the long-term interests of the Armenian people. The Russian Foreign Ministry told Lenta.ru this.
The Russian Foreign Ministry noted that official Yerevan's statements on European integration "ignore" the militarization of the European Union and its preparations for a direct military confrontation with Moscow. The Foreign Ministry also recalled statements by EU representatives about the need to inflict a "strategic defeat" on Russia, as well as the ongoing military and financial support for Ukraine.
"We are convinced that membership in such an aggressive anti-Russian alliance would be contrary to the long-term interests of the Armenian people," the Russian Foreign Ministry stated.
Earlier, the Russian Foreign Ministry also called the Armenian authorities' decision to hold a referendum on membership in the EU and the Eurasian Economic Union blatant manipulation. The ministry characterized Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's statements as an example of official Yerevan's inverted logic.
It is worth noting that Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced from the parliamentary rostrum on August 24 that the country intends to apply for EU membership in the near future. He also expressed his belief that the country should hold a referendum on EU or EAEU membership only after applying for EU membership and receiving a response.
