ArmInfo. The opposition intends to appeal to the Constitutional Court of Armenia to challenge the government's program for 2026-2031. Vice Speaker of the National Assembly (NA) Aram Vardevanyan announced this in a conversation with journalists in the Armenian parliament on August 25.
According to him, this program means that Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan is aiming for 13 years in power. "The government, which talks about democracy every day, is aiming for 13 years in office. Imagine that in the US, there is only one example of a person in power for more than 10 years – that was Franklin Roosevelt (almost 12 years – ed.). But this was the man who won World War II and overcame the greatest socioeconomic crisis in US history. Meanwhile, Pashinyan, who in the past eight years has brought the country three defeats and external threats, failed to overcome a single socioeconomic crisis, and led to the occupation of Armenia's sovereign territories, has decided to become Armenia's Franklin Roosevelt," Vardevanyan noted.
According to him, Armenia's history has never seen a government project like the one presented in the last two days, nor a government that has held power for as long as Pashinyan is aiming to. "I believe the Armenian people will yet have their say." "And yes, we intend to appeal to the Constitutional Court," the Deputy Speaker of Parliament stated.
Commenting on the incident involving Armenia's second president, Robert Kocharyan, Vardevanyan noted that he wants to understand how many more weeks or months it will take for the authorities to finally understand that it's one thing to initiate a criminal case, another to disseminate information about it, and quite another to apply a preventive measure. "Moreover, they first claim that they've been aware of what's happening for a long time, and at the same time, they wonder why this is all happening only now. It's not at all clear who they're fighting against. Who are they dissatisfied with," Vardevanyan concluded.
It's worth noting that during the August 25 parliamentary session, a new government program for 2026-2031 was adopted. Sixty-three deputies from the ruling Civil Contract faction voted in favor of the program, while 24 voted against. The opposition Strong Armenia and Armenia factions, in turn, boycotted the parliamentary session this morning due to the morning searches of the homes of members of the family of Armenia's second president, Robert Kocharyan, and his subsequent detention.
