ArmInfo.  After submitting its EU membership application, Yerevan will face profound contradictions within the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), which will be detrimental  to Armenia itself. This was stated by Dmitry Peskov, press secretary  of the Russian president, to reporters.

"There's a very important aspect here, which our representatives, and  especially our head of state, have also discussed. After submitting  the application, Armenia will have to begin the process of aligning  its legislation in a wide range of areas-trade, phytosanitary,  customs, and so on-with European standards, with those of the  European Union. These standards are at odds with those adopted in our  country and those adopted in the EAEU. And this is precisely where we  will encounter profound contradictions that will primarily harm  Armenia itself," Peskov emphasized, according to TASS.

The Kremlin representative clarified that this is precisely why the  last EAEU summit adopted a statement in which the heads of state of  the union called on Armenia to hold a referendum as soon as possible.

It's worth noting that Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan  announced from the parliamentary rostrum on August 24 that the  country intends to apply for EU membership in the near future. At the  same time, he expressed his conviction that the republic would have  to hold a referendum regarding its membership in the EU or the EAEU  only after submitting an application for membership in the European  Union and receiving a response to this application.
