Police officer who beat two investigators arrested

ArmInfo. The police officer who beat two investigators and another defendant have been remanded in custody for two months by court order. Kima Avdalyan, press secretary of the Investigative Committee (IC) of Armenia, announced this on her  Facebook page, responding to information disseminated by the news  websites Ishkhanutyun.am and Armlur.am.

Earlier, Avdalyan denied reports published by these media outlets  that investigators, with the participation of the head of the  department, brutally beat the police officer. She stated that "this  information is untrue, constitutes fictitious slander, devoid of  objective evidence," and is intended to distract public attention  from the real situation. "On August 21, 2026, the Serious Crimes  Investigation Department of the Yerevan City Investigative Department  initiated and is conducting a criminal investigation into the brutal  beating of two investigators from the Investigative Department of the  relevant administrative district of the Yerevan City Investigative  Department of the Investigative Committee of Armenia by approximately  20 or more individuals, including the relevant police officer of the  Ministry of Internal Affairs of Armenia, as well as individuals  related to them, directly in front of the building of the same  department, as well as hooliganism.  As part of the investigation,  the aforementioned police officer and two other individuals related  to him were detained," the Investigative Committee's press secretary  wrote.

She reported that the police officer was under the influence of  alcohol at the time of the incident. 

"Regarding the unfounded speculation contained in the publication, it  should be noted that immediately after his arrest on August 21,  recognizing the inevitability of criminal liability for his actions,  the Armenian Ministry of Internal Affairs police officer, both  personally and through a lawyer, submitted statements to the  investigating agency regarding the alleged torture committed against  him. The investigating agency then, on its own initiative, organized  a medical examination of the detainee both in the administrative  building and at relevant medical facilities, which also refuted the  alleged use of violence against him. Thus, the publication by the  news website aims to distort the factual circumstances of the  investigation and interfere with the normal course of the preliminary  investigation," Avdalyan stated.

Earlier, media outlets reported that late that night, in front of the  Yerevan City Department of the Investigative Committee,  investigators, with the participation of Department Head Rafael  Vardanyan, brutally beat a municipal police officer, after which an  ambulance was called. According to media reports, relatives of the  man who was beaten said that the investigators took revenge on the  police officer because a conflict had occurred between him, the  investigators, and a citizen the day before.
