ArmInfo. Reforming the Armenian Apostolic Holy Church is vital for resolving the issue of building a spiritual life based on national values, according to the Armenian government's program for 2026–2031.
The program states that reforming the Church aims to bring it into the sphere of canonization and prevent its politicization. "To ensure spiritual security, eliminate attempts by external forces to turn the Armenian Apostolic Holy Church into a base for hybrid warfare, and reform the Church, efforts will be undertaken to implement the following measures: the removal (resignation) of the de facto head of the Armenian Apostolic Holy Church will be ensured, and elections of the Catholicosate will be held in accordance with established procedures," the document reads.
Additionally, the authorities plan to ensure the adoption of a new charter for the Church to establish mechanisms for upholding established principles, financial transparency, and proper conduct of the clergy. The government has also committed to integrating the clergy into the state social security system and ensuring transparency in Church financing.
