Prosecutor General of the Republic of Armenia Anna Vardapetyan has submitted a formal cassation appeal to the Court of Cassation, challenging a June 25, 2026 ruling by the Criminal Court of Appeal concerning Archbishop Mikael Ajapahyan, primate of the Shirak Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church, as reported by Ajapahyan's defense team. They also stated that the prosecution is seeking to overturn the appellate court's decision.
Recall, the Criminal Court of Appeals overturned the house arrest imposed as a preventive measure against Archbishop Mikael Ajapahyan. The court also overturned the trial court's decision in his case and remanded it for a new trial. The archbishop was charged with public calls for the violent seizure of power or the overthrow of the constitutional order (Part 2 of Article 422 of the Armenian Criminal Code). The charges are based on statements and interviews he gave.
