ArmInfo. A solemn memorial rally and wreath-laying ceremony at the "Heroes of Oshakan" monument will take place on August 17 to mark the 199th anniversary of the historic Battle of Oshakan.
According to the press service of the Russian Embassy in Armenia, the event is organized by the "Russia" NGO with the support of the Russian House in Yerevan.
The Battle of Oshakan, also known as the Battle of Ashtarak, took place during the Russo-Persian War of 1826–1828. During the campaign, a detachment commanded by General Afanasy Krasovsky came to the aid of the besieged Etchmiadzin Monastery.
Regarding the events of that day, Archbishop Nerses Ashtaraketsi, abbot of the Etchmiadzin Monastery, noted: "A handful of Russian brothers fought their way through a thirty-thousand-strong army of furious enemies to reach us. This small band has earned immortal glory, and the name of General Krasovsky will remain forever unforgettable in the chronicles of Etchmiadzin."
