ArmInfo. The National Assembly of Armenia observed a moment of silence in memory of the victims of the Yazidi Genocide in Sinjar. This initiative was introduced by Rustam Bakoyan, a member of parliament from the ruling Civil Contract faction, at the first session of the 9th National Assembly
He recalled that the extermination of an entire people on August 3, 2014, was a catastrophe for the Yazidis. "What happened in 2014 continues today. Yazidi women and girls continue to be sold in markets in Arab countries, and the fate of approximately 3,000 women remains unknown," Bakoyan noted. According to the MP, the Yazidi genocide resulted in tens of thousands of people being killed, and an equal number being sold into slavery. Following his remarks, the MP briefly addressed the assembly in the Yazidi language.
The Yazidi genocide began when militants from the Islamic State (ISIS) terrorist group launched a coordinated attack on the Sinjar region in Iraq. The offensive resulted in mass killings, forced conversions, and the abduction of thousands. ISIS militants surrounded Mount Sinjar, forcing communities to face extreme violence, with thousands of men and elderly women executed and approximately 7,000 women and children subjected to enslavement. More than 400,000 Yazidis were displaced, fleeing into the mountains without basic provisions. These atrocities have since been formally recognized as genocide by the United Nations and numerous nations worldwide.
