Ashotyan proposes that the opposition establish two parliamentary  investigative commissions

ArmInfo. The parliamentary opposition should take the initiative to establish two investigative commissions in the National Assembly of Armenia: one on political  prisoners and another to investigate the abuse of state resources.  This proposal was addressed to the opposition by Armen Ashotyan, Vice  Chairman of the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA), writing from the  Vardashen penitentiary.

The RPA Deputy Chairman explained the appropriateness of this  proposal by saying that the decision to accept parliamentary mandates  was justified, among other things, by the opportunity to utilize  parliamentary instruments. First and foremost, he called on the  opposition to propose the creation of an investigative commission to  investigate the abuse of state resources, the use of administrative  resources, and external interference during the recent parliamentary  elections. 

 "This step will institutionalize the opposition's claim of election  fraud by the current government on the political agenda. By  leveraging the powers of the National Assembly, new facts and  circumstances can be uncovered in this regard. It is also important  to shed light on the activities of the new European Union mission  during the election period. I would remind you, for instance, of the  scandalous Euronews report dedicated to sociological polls," Ashotyan  noted.

He acknowledged that the functions, mandate, and areas of competence  of such a commission require further discussion, but expressed  confidence that the creation of such a commission in the new National  Assembly is truly justified. Another area of activity for the  investigative commission, he said, could be the issue of political  prisoners in Armenia. "Considering the unprecedented scale of this  problem, the standing Human Rights Commission is insufficient for its  comprehensive and full study. Moreover, the creation of such a  commission in the National Assembly could be an important  institutional step, facilitating political, public, and international  understanding of this issue," the RPA Deputy Chairman believes.  Furthermore, as Ashotyan noted, this investigative commission could  become the core for other public, civic, and socio- political  initiatives already existing in this area. "I hope that these  proposals will prove useful both for the parliamentary opposition and  for maximizing the effectiveness of the National Assembly's political  agenda," the RPA Deputy Chairman concluded.  Recall, the first  session of the National Assembly of Armenia will take place on August  2 at 10:00 AM.
