ArmInfo. The criminal case initiated by these authorities against Catholicos of All Armenians Karekin II is a stigma for every representative of the Armenian nation who has national identity. Human rights activist Ruben Melikyan wrote about this on his Facebook page.
"ARD/0444/01/26 is not just a criminal case, but a true stigma for every representative of the Armenian nation who possesses national identity. Within the framework of the criminal case bearing this number, the so-called 'Armenian' state has placed the successor of the Apostle Thaddeus, the 132nd successor to the throne of Saint Gregory the Illuminator, the Catholicos of All Armenians Karekin II, in the defendant's seat and is putting him on trial. This is already an indelible stigma," Melikyan wrote.
The Prosecutor General's Office confirmed that the case has been sent to court. "The indictment against six bishops and the Catholicos of All Armenians has been confirmed and sent to court," the office told ArmInfo.
Recall, in February of this year, the Armenian Prosecutor's Office launched a criminal case against Catholicos of All Armenians Karekin II, and he is banned from leaving the country. The case is based on charges of obstructing the execution of a judicial decision related to the defrocking of Arman Saroyan. Khachatur Galstyan was appointed prosecutor in the criminal case. Several other high-ranking clergy are also involved in the case.
It should be noted that since May 2025, the Armenian authorities have been actively pursuing an anti- church policy and are seeking the resignation of Catholicos of All Armenians Karekin II, who is elected to this position for life. This campaign has targeted both clergy and citizens who support the Church.
