The defense team for Gagik Tsarukyan, businessman and leader of the "Prosperous Armenia" party, has filed a special appeal with the Criminal Court of Appeal of Armenia, seeking to overturn the decision to detain him as a preventive measure. Emin Khachatryan, one of Tsarukyan's lawyers, shared this information on his Facebook page.
"The appeal details the material and procedural law violations committed by the court of first instance, the defense's arguments regarding the validity of the suspicion and the legality of the arrest, as well as the possibility of applying alternative preventive measures. The defense hopes that the Court of Appeal will provide a full, objective, and impartial assessment of the case circumstances, ensuring a fair trial and effective protection of the right to personal liberty," the lawyer stated.
Recall, on July 6, Prosperous Armenia Party leader and businessman Gagik Tsarukyan was detained and taken to the Investigative Committee of Armenia. He is accused of organizing fraud and money laundering on an especially large scale. ccording to the investigation, between 2022 and 2024, a group operating under his leadership established joint legal entities with the participation of Iranian citizens under the pretext of developing trade and economic ties between Armenia and Iran, subsequently implementing a fraudulent scheme that caused damages exceeding $21 million. Additionally, Gagik Tsarukyan faces a separate charge of illegal hunting. On July 7, the court granted the prosecution's motion to remand Tsarukyan in custody for a period of two months.
