ArmInfo. The Republic of Armenia is facing a serious legal security problem. Political authorities constantly and publicly announce the initiation of criminal and other proceedings against this or that individual, after which the entire law enforcement system, investigative bodies, the prosecutor's office, and the courts begin to execute these political directives, as stated by Yerem Sargsyan, one of the attorneys for businessman Gagik Tsarukyan, leader of the Prosperous Armenia Party.
He was responding to the country's Prosecutor General's Office's announcement that his client's cement plant had been placed under state management.
"In this case, a political order was issued regarding Gagik Tsarukyan. It called for criminal proceedings, his arrest, detention, the confiscation of assets including the nationalization of Araratcement and the appointment of a state manager. The entire law enforcement system is executing this directive precisely on a daily basis. Moreover, even the supposedly independent courts are involved in this," the attorney noted. He further stated that despite assurances that all these processes have a legal basis, reality suggests the contrary.
"The current situation clearly shows that the law enforcement system is acting exclusively for political purposes, to fulfill the wishes of the political authorities and maintain a high political rating. It was announced that Gagik Tsarukyan would not be permitted to leave the country after the elections, which is exactly what happened. The Prosecutor's Office brought a clearly unlawful charge, and a travel ban was imposed. Subsequently, they themselves confirmed the obvious illegality of that charge," the attorney noted.
He recalled that the Armenian authorities had previously announced their intention to nationalize Araratcement and appoint a manager. "Today, it was published that the Anti-Corruption Court, at the request of the Prosecutor's Office, has made such a decision. Gagik Tsarukyan's legal team was not even informed of the ruling; no information regarding these processes had emerged, and the decision itself has not yet been provided," Sargsyan pointed out.
According to him, all of this serves as direct evidence that prior to the statements by political authorities, there was no need to conduct such procedures. After the statements, the entire law enforcement system suddenly awakens, revealing that such procedures should have been conducted solely from a legal perspective. "Talking about law and rights is simply superfluous," he concluded.
