ArmInfo. Human rights activist Ruben Melikyan warns that in the past two days, the absurd thesis that human rights can be trampled in the name of defending "democracy" has been actively spreading in Armenia.
"First, let's analyze this thesis from a logical perspective. Fundamental human rights are an integral part of the phenomenon of 'democracy.' Therefore, the thesis 'human rights can be trampled in the name of defending democracy' can easily be reformulated as 'democracy can be trampled in the name of defending democracy.' And this is absurd," Melikyan wrote in his Facebook post.
He then proposed analyzing this thesis from a moral perspective. According to the human rights activist, all tyrannical regimes justified their crimes with some "higher values," regardless of what that value was: the Reich in the case of fascism, class interests in the case of Bolshevism, or "democracy."
"The point is to create the image of an enemy who supposedly encroaches on the 'higher value' and therefore must be destroyed at any cost. The emphasis is on 'at any cost.' The formula of values is: 'the end justifies the means.' And this is a universal justification for all kinds of distortions of public morality, that is, the antithesis of morality," Melikyan stated.
According to him, if we analyze this thesis from a legal perspective, we can confidently say that on the day the law enforcement system in Armenia emerges from its status as a dependent state, those actively spreading this thesis can be accused, for example, of calling for the overthrow of the constitutional order, since what they are saying effectively amounts to suspending Article 1 of the Constitution, which states that "the Republic of Armenia[:] is a legitimate state," creating a false dichotomy with the other position enshrined in the same article, "the Republic of Armenia[:] is a democratic[:] state."
"We will be vigilant and identify those actively spreading this fascist thesis. I'll give you a few hints: 'Putin,' 'autonomy,' 'Kremlin,' 'Russian slave,'" the human rights activist concluded.
