ArmInfo. The Central Electoral Commission (CEC) of Armenia has returned to the Prosecutor General's Office several petitions requesting consent for the criminal prosecution and, in specific cases, the detention of a number of parliamentary candidates.
According to an official statement released by the CEC, the Commission was unable to review these petitions due to an excessive workload stemming from the ongoing process at the Constitutional Court regarding challenges to the election results.
The CEC clarified that under the Electoral Code of Armenia, the rights and obligations associated with parliamentary candidacy expired on July 4, 2026. "Therefore, the question of granting consent for the initiation of criminal prosecution or for the deprivation of liberty of individuals who no longer hold the status of parliamentary candidate falls outside the jurisdiction of the Central Electoral Commission," the source stated.
The petitions returned to the Prosecutor General's Office concerned requests for consent to initiate criminal proceedings against the leader of the "Prosperous Armenia" party's electoral list, Gagik Tsarukyan, and candidate Levon Nalbandyan from the "Strong Armenia" bloc. Additionally, the petitions included requests for criminal prosecution and the deprivation of liberty of candidates from the same bloc: Hayk Avagyan, Mher Aghamyan, Narek Karapetyan, and Sasun Badoyan.
