ArmInfo. Olympic silver medalist, multiple World and European Championship medalist in Greco-Roman wrestling, and former Armenian parliament member Arsen Julfalakyan sharply criticized the actions of law enforcement agencies against Prosperous Armenia Party leader Gagik Tsarukyan.
"What they did to Gagik Tsarukyan today is disgusting. And this doesn't only concern him - it demonstrates the state's lack of basic humane attitude toward its citizens," Julfalakyan wrote on his Facebook page.
The athlete called it unacceptable that dozens of security forces were deployed to detain a 70-year-old man who was alone at home, did not resist, and was willing to obey the law.
At the same time, Julfalakyan emphasized that he is not a political ally of Tsarukyan, and has not maintained any relationship with him since February 2020 due to their differing views on both politics and sports. However, he cannot remain silent in light of the current situation. The former Armenian parliament member further emphasized that anything can be expected from a political team that has surrendered Artsakh.
"Expect anything from the person and the political team that surrendered Artsakh. The Constitution, the Church, holy sites, the Genocide Memorial, history, traditions, family-they respect nothing. Armenia is occupied by the enemy, with all the ensuing consequences. Today, after the blatant election fraud, we are witnessing a disgusting political perversion," Julfalakyan stated.
Arsen Julfalakyan is a silver medalist at the 2012 London Olympics, a world champion (2014), a two-time European champion in Greco-Roman wrestling, and an Honored Master of Sports of Armenia.
As a reminder, on July 6, Gagik Tsarukyan, leader of the Prosperous Armenia Party and businessman, was detained and taken to the Investigative Committee of Armenia. He is accused of organizing fraud and money laundering on an especially large scale. According to investigators, between 2022 and 2024, a group operating under his leadership, under the pretext of developing trade and economic ties between Armenia and Iran, created joint legal entities with the participation of Iranian citizens, after which they carried out a fraudulent scheme, causing damages totaling over $21 million. Additionally, Gagik Tsarukyan faces another charge of illegal hunting. On July 7, the court granted the prosecution's motion to remand Tsarukyan in custody for two months.
On the evening of July 7, the Investigative Committee of Armenia released footage of Gagik Tsarukyan's arrest, which shows National Security Service officers violently detaining the politician and forcing him to the floor when he offered no resistance. This footage, released by the Investigative Committee of Armenia, provoked a negative reaction in Armenian society. Most citizens expressed outrage at the detention methods used against the 70-year-old politician, who is accused of economic crimes. Experts called these actions against the politician and businessman a political reprisal that has nothing to do with justice.
