ArmInfo. The European Union has already invested 2.5 billion euros in Armenian infrastructure projects, as stated by Vassilis Maragos, Head of the EU Delegation to Armenia, in an interview with Armenian Public Television.
According to him, this applies to both the North-South Transport Corridor project and other areas. The diplomat emphasized that the EU is building a checkpoint on the Armenian-Iranian border in Meghri. "The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has announced the expansion of assistance for the modernization and construction of three new checkpoints in Armenia—in Akhurik, Yeraskh, and Margara. This is a concrete example of our involvement in projects and our support for regional connectivity," the diplomat said.
Maragos clarified that the EU will also provide assistance in improving the northern route, which runs through Armenian territory toward the borders with Turkey and Azerbaijan. "This is included in the new aid package announced by von der Leyen—a 200 million euro grant project and 2 billion euros in financing for the entire region. The Armenian people will benefit from this; it will create new opportunities for connectivity. Armenians will be working on these projects, and this is in the interest of the Armenian people," he stated.
Recall, Ursula von der Leyen paid a working visit to Yerevan on July 2. During her visit, she met with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, followed by a joint press conference. The head of the European Commission was in Azerbaijan the previous day, where she held talks with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. In Baku, von der Leyen announced the allocation of up to 200 million euros in grants to Azerbaijan for the development of transport, energy, and digital connections in the South Caucasus. She reiterated this figure in Yerevan, noting that this could attract up to 2 billion euros in public and private investment in the South Caucasus.
