
ArmInfo.Yerevan is set to host the FIBA U16 European Championship, Division C, taking place from July 4 to July 12, 2026. This marks the first time Armenia has served as the host country for this age category.
The press service of the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports (MESCS) told ArmInfo that this marks the first time Armenia has served as the host country for this age category.
The Armenian U16 national team has been drawn into Group B, where they will compete against Gibraltar, Malta, Andorra, and Monaco. The squad features athletes from Armenia, the United States, and Russia. A total of 24 matches will be held throughout the tournament.
"A total of 24 matches will be held in Division C as part of the European Championship. In the group stage, the Armenian U16 team will play: against Andorra on July 4; against Gibraltar on July 5; against Malta on July 8; and against Monaco on July 9. The tournament final will take place on July 12," the Ministry reported.
During a press conference in Yerevan, Narine Shahbazyan, Head of the Sports Policy Department at the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports (MESCS), emphasized the significance of the event. "Such tournaments are vital for gaining international experience and strengthening Armenia's reputation as a host for major competitions," she stated. "We are hopeful that the Armenian team can advance to Division B, which would serve as a major stimulus for the development of youth basketball—a key priority for us."
The Armenian Basketball Federation's press service reported that Yura Melikyan, a member of the Armenian national team and the Swiss club "Starwings Basel," has been selected in the 2026-2027 NBA G League International Draft. Melikyan was selected 16th overall by the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, an affiliate of the NBA's Houston Rockets. He was among only 20 players chosen in this year's international draft.
