ArmInfo. Relations between the European Commission and Azerbaijan are in a very active phase - an unprecedented dynamic that reflects the mutual desire of both sides to intensify cooperation and strengthen their partnership. This was stated by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in Baku on July 1 following talks with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
In his speech, Aliyev noted that the EU is Azerbaijan's main trading partner, stating that over 40% of the country's trade turnover is with EU member states. He added that Azerbaijan accounts for 70% of EU trade in the South Caucasus.
Aliyev stated that currently, half of Azerbaijan's gas exports go to EU member states, and a total of 10 EU member states receive Azerbaijani gas, with potential for expansion.
"Transport connectivity issues have undoubtedly become an important topic of our discussions. Azerbaijan is an active participant and, in many cases, an initiator of regional transport projects. The East-West and North-South transport corridors pass through Azerbaijan, and good relations with our neighbors and our neighbors' neighbors have allowed us to develop a very broad cooperation format that meets the interests of all participants. Given the new geopolitical situation, we see the need to expand the capacity of our commercial seaports and railway infrastructure," the Azerbaijani leader said.
He went on to say that he and von der Leyen had discussed regional security issues in detail, particularly the process of normalizing relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia, which is progressing successfully. Recalling the Washington Agreements of August 8, 2025, Aliyev stated that "de facto peace has been achieved, and we see its benefits."
"Azerbaijan has lifted all restrictions on the transit of goods through its territory to Armenia. We have also begun supplying Armenia with critical fuel, particularly gasoline and diesel. In the current geopolitical situation, this is even more important than ever. Thus, we are demonstrating that for us, peace is something we can already feel, sense, and learn to live in peace. And we have offered peace to Armenia. So, peace is now a reality, but we must work hard to strengthen it, make it lasting, make it eternal, and, of course, we highly appreciate the support of the European Commission," Aliyev said, not failing to once again boast about aggression against Armenia and Artsakh.
