ArmInfo. The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Armenia has completed the design of new biometric identification cards (ID cards), which, along with next-generation biometric passports, are scheduled to be introduced in the fall of 2026.
According to the presentation by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Armenia, the new ID cards were created as a next-generation document compliant with the international ICAO Doc 9303 standard, which is used for modern electronic ID cards and passports. This ensures compatibility with international document verification systems and automated border control.
Specifically, the card incorporates the holder's photo, created using LASINK Origin technology-laser engraving of the image within a polycarbonate layer, making the photo virtually impossible to counterfeit. Additional security is provided by a three-dimensional laser image (SLI) (Changeable Laser Image), which changes when the card is tilted. Another element is a special FLOW PRINT security pattern, which makes it difficult to reproduce the document.
The front side features a transparent holographic element that changes appearance when viewed from a different angle. When exposed to ultraviolet light, the card reveals hidden images and Armenian national symbols, including the coat of arms and protective ornaments.
The background image of the document is created using complex geometric guilloche meshes, consisting of fine intertwined lines. Individual elements are printed with special security inks.
The back side features a contact electronic chip for storing the owner's biometric and personal data, as well as a QR code that allows for quick data acquisition using specialized verification tools. As a reminder, a sample of the new Armenian citizen's document was officially unveiled for the first time at the Identity Week Europe 2026 international exhibition.
According to the approved reform of the Armenian Ministry of Internal Affairs, biometric ID cards will become mandatory for Armenian citizens aged 16 and older. Possession of such cards will be required to obtain a new biometric passport. The issuance of the new-generation documents will begin in the fall of 2026. These changes are part of the action plan for visa liberalization between Armenia and the EU.
