ArmInfo. Armenia's ruling Civil Contract party is not considering nominating the current Speaker of the RA National Assembly, Alen Simonyan, for the post of RA President. RA Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced this to journalists yesterday at a briefing following the party's board meeting.
Earlier, it was reported that incumbent RA President Vahagn Khachaturyan would leave his post due to deteriorating health and take the position of Chief Advisor to the RA Prime Minister. Alen Simonyan will be nominated to replace him.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister noted that this issue is not even being discussed. Pashinyan also denied rumors of interpersonal problems with Alen Simonyan. According to him, there are absolutely no interpersonal problems in the relationship between the two politicians. Regarding the current NA Speaker's future vision, Pashinyan noted that this issue would be discussed and a decision would be made by both the political team and Simonyan himself.
"We will compare our opinions, or if they disagree, we will discuss and see," Pashinyan noted, emphasizing the importance of having former high-ranking officials on the political team. "It is very important that we, as a political team, include people not only who hold this position but also those who held this position in the past, because, ultimately, this is experience. Currently, our team includes two former NA Speakers, former ministers, a former deputy prime minister, and so on. This is political capital, which I consider very important," the Prime Minister said.
As a reminder, the ruling party previously nominated current Deputy Speaker Ruben Rubinyan for the position of NA Speaker.
