ArmInfo. The Central Electoral Commission of Armenia has authorized the criminal prosecution of Robert Kocharyan, the country's second president and leader of the "Armenia" bloc.
Following the review of the Prosecutor General's Office's motion, he was stripped of his parliamentary immunity. According to his lawyer, Aram Orbelyan, the case involves charges of abuse of office and money laundering.
The defense attorney stated that the Central Election Commission's (CEC) decision is related to an investigation into real estate transactions conducted between 2004 and 2009. Orbelyan asserted that his client has no connection to these operations and considers the charges brought against him to be unfounded. The lawyer also clarified that the investigation into abuse of office charges has been ongoing since 2018.
The defense maintains that the case file lacks sufficient grounds to bring claims against the former head of state.
