ArmInfo. The charges brought against the second President of Armenia and leader of the "Armenia" bloc, Robert Kocharyan, are politically motivated and linked to ongoing political processes in the country. This was stated by his lawyer, Aram Orbelyan, in an interview with journalists outside the Central Election Commission (CEC), where the issue of stripping Kocharyan of his immunity is currently being considered.
According to the attorney, the allegations against Kocharyan have nothing to do with a legitimate criminal case. "The presented facts do not constitute a crime, do not correspond to the documents gathered by the investigator or the Prosecutor General, and pertain to a 2004 deal approved by the Armenian government. This decision cannot be challenged in any way, and Kocharyan and his family members have no connection to the deal in question," the lawyer stated.
As Orbelyan clarified, there is an attempt to link the case to events that took place after Kocharyan had already left public office. "At that time, his son, Sedrak Kocharyan, acquired a stake in the company by paying a significant sum corresponding to the market value. Now, there is an attempt to somehow connect these events to the 2004 deal. We are talking about the territory of the 'Master Class' tennis club. The land was leased, and later, a completely different person began construction there. However, due to the economic crisis and subsequent financial difficulties, he began looking for investors. An offer was made, among others, to the second president's son, who, in essence, simply invested in that company," the lawyer clarified.
Thus, according to Orbelyan, there is no criminal component in the case. "I believe the case is intertwined with political processes in the country, as there are no other reasons to initiate it. Moreover, the statute of limitations for this case has long since expired," he concluded.
