ArmInfo. The issue of Armenia's membership in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) is already a pressing issue, as stated by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov at a press conference on June 10, following the CSTO Foreign Ministers' Council meeting in Kazan.
The Russian Foreign Minister recalled the ongoing processes between Armenia and the EAEU, noting that the Armenian authorities' reaction was that it would be the Armenian people, not the authorities, who would decide the country's withdrawal from the EAEU when the issue became pressing. "The Armenian authorities are actively noting that leaving the Eurasian Economic Union is out of the question for now, as long as we haven't yet joined the European Union. But, as you know, Armenia has already passed a law on accession to the EU, so the issue is already pressing. Russian President Vladimir Putin and members of the Russian government responsible for economic issues within the EAEU have spoken about this. And this matter will have to be addressed quite quickly. And not because we don't respect the choice of the Armenian people, but because we want to know. Otherwise, it will be impossible to implement the law on Armenia's accession to the EU and remain in the EAEU," Lavrov said, noting that the norms regulating these two associations are mutually exclusive.
He reiterated that this is not a matter of disrespect for Armenia's interests, but rather that respect for the will of the Armenian people was demonstrated quickly, so that the Armenian people had a choice, rather than being presented with a fait accompli.
