ArmInfo. Armenia understands perfectly well the impossibility of simultaneous membership in the European Union (EU) and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). Armenian Deputy Prime Minister Mher Grigoryan stated this in an interview with TASS. He emphasized that when the need arises to determine which of the two unions to join, the decision will be made by Armenian citizens.
"We understand perfectly well that Armenia cannot be a member of both the EAEU and the EU simultaneously, and it is clear that in the future we will need to make the appropriate decision. Moreover, the decision on this issue will, of course, be made by Armenian citizens. There is no such need now," he said.
Grigoryan also noted that Armenia is a full member of the EAEU, cooperating constructively and fully participating in discussions and decision-making processes.
As a reminder, on May 9, Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed that Yerevan hold a referendum on joining the EU to determine its path as quickly as possible. If the European path were chosen, Putin proposed a gentle, intelligent, and mutually beneficial divorce. He also drew attention to the situation in Ukraine, noting that it all began with the country's attempt to join the EU.
According to the RA Statistics Committee, foreign trade turnover between Armenia and the EAEU countries decreased by 36.9% in 2025, exceeding $8 billion. Export volumes decreased by 5% to $3.2 billion, while imports fell by 48.5% to $4.8 billion.
Mutual trade with EU countries increased by 7.2% during the reporting period, reaching $2.5 billion. Specifically, exports grew by 9% to $666.8 million, while imports grew by 6.5% to $1.8 billion.
