ArmInfo. Historic progress has been recorded on visa liberalization between Armenia and the European Union. RA Minister of Internal Affairs Arpine Sargsyan stated this in a video address.
According to her, Armenia is currently the only country in the world with which the European Union is actively engaged in a dialogue on visa liberalization. Public expectations for this process are very high, and the Ministry of Internal Affairs transparently reports on every development. Negotiations on visa liberalization began in September 2024, after which the country quickly and with a high level of trust received an Action Plan from the EU. In May 2026, our European partners presented the first progress report. In particular, as Arpine Sargsyan noted, Armenia is advancing ahead of schedule on a number of proposals, fulfilling its obligations, meaning that more has been accomplished than expected. This is also confirmed by assessments from European officials. For example, the President of the European Commission praised Armenia's efforts and expressed confidence that the country will achieve its goal.
The Minister assured that, as Armenia's lead negotiator, she will continue to work consistently and move forward with clear steps toward achieving this goal, ensuring visa- free travel and affordable travel. "For Armenian citizens, this is a new opportunity to become closer to Europe," Arpine Sargsyan concluded.
As a reminder, the visa liberalization dialogue between Armenia and the EU officially launched in September 2024, entering its active phase. In May 2026, Yerevan received a positive progress report from the EU, confirming the fulfillment of the key requirements of the Action Plan (VLAP), which aims to grant Armenian citizens 90-day visa-free entry to the Schengen Area. Armenia is counting on a final decision that will eliminate the need for visas for short-term trips to the EU.
