ArmInfo.Azerbaijan's termination of contacts with the European Parliament is a sovereign decision of the country, and it comes as no surprise given the body's interference in the affairs of other nations. Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova made this statement during her weekly briefing on May 7, in response to a request to comment on Baku's decision following the European Parliament's April 30 resolution in support of Armenian rights.
"As you know, it is Baku's sovereign decision to cease all contact with the so-called European Parliament, and this decision causes no surprise. Azerbaijan is not the only state facing the boorishness and disrespect of this structure, nor its direct interference in the internal affairs of sovereign states. These anti-scientific resolutions which are not merely politicized but outright fake are churned out by this structure like an endlessly stamping broken printer. The language used in these resolutions toward third countries is predominantly characterized by an arrogant, mentoring tone, much like a metropole speaking to its colonies. Or rather, it is more like Napoleon from the neighboring hospital ward trying to give orders to the medical staff. That is what it looks like," Zakharova said.
She further asserted that the European Parliament has long since turned into a mouthpiece for Brussels' new ultra-liberal agendas, has nothing to do with democracy, and is "anti-democratic in its very essence."
On April 30, the European Parliament adopted a resolution "Supporting Democratic Resilience in Armenia," which, among other things, demands that the Azerbaijani authorities immediately release all Armenian prisoners held in Baku and ensure the rights of the people of Artsakh to return to their homes. In response, on May 1, the Milli Majlis (Parliament) of Azerbaijan suspended cooperation with the European Parliament in all areas.
