ArmInfo. The most important institutionalization of peace is that which occurs in people's thinking and at the socio-psychological level, as stated by the Armenian Prime Minister, Nikol Pashinyan, during a press conference on May 5 following the Armenia-EU summit.
He noted that Armenia and Azerbaijan have lived in a hostile atmosphere for 40 years and that achieving peace is not something that can be done "at the push of a button." The Prime Minister pointed out that both Armenia and Azerbaijan share a rhetoric that was formed during the conflict. "However, we must understand that this is an inevitable, inertial process," Pashinyan said. He emphasized that the institutionalization of peace involves more than just signing and ratification of a peace treaty by countries, first and foremost, it requires a shift in people's thinking.
The results of such a process, according to Pashinyan, are difficult to reflect in any registered indicators, but he is convinced that this is happening faster than expected.
The institutionalization of peace, he noted, is also reflected in the improvement of trade relations. In particular, the prime minister recalled that 26,000 tons of cargo have arrived in Armenia via Azerbaijani railways, and that Armenia also imports petroleum products from the Azerbaijani market.
However, according to Pashinyan, the signing and ratification of the peace treaty will by no means mark the completion of the work. On the contrary, it will be followed by the signing of new agreements, including sectoral cooperation agreements.
