ArmInfo. The European Union welcomes Armenia's commitment to strong democracy. This was stated on May 4 by Roberta Mezzola, President of the European Parliament, who arrived in Armenia to participate in the 8th European Political Community (EPC) Summit.
"It gives me great pleasure to be here in beautiful Yerevan. I am very grateful for the invitation we received from Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, a few weeks after his speech in the European Parliament and just days after we overwhelmingly adopted a resolution welcoming Armenia's commitment to strong democracy and the European values we share. Today, in this increasingly unpredictable world, we also welcome the presence of the Prime Minister of Canada, Mr. Carney." "We are here to discuss ways to further integrate with our allies and partners around the world. I had a meeting with the Prime Minister yesterday, and I can say it was excellent. We discussed further steps we can take to bring us closer to those who share our values and commitment to the founding principles of our society," Mezzola said.
She added that the fight against disinformation and hybrid threats will also be discussed at the summit. "These are no longer distant risks: the European Parliament is particularly interested in working with stakeholders to ensure their eradication, as they pose a real threat to democracy." Wars are waged not only on land, but also in the digital space, and they target and undermine the most vulnerable sections of our societies. Therefore, in this regard, we also seek to cooperate with social platforms. They are our partners in ensuring that tools designed to bring people together are not used to the detriment of democracy. Finally, regarding artificial intelligence: we are aware of the existing concerns, but this should not prevent us from using artificial intelligence to solve the problems and challenges facing us, to ensure the protection of our democracies. I have listed the problems, we know how to solve them, but now we need the political will to do so. And I am confident that we will find this political will today," the President of the European Parliament noted.
