ArmInfo. Current "blue passports" of citizens of the Republic of Armenia will remain valid until their expiration date. This was announced on her Facebook page by Nelly Davtyan, Head of the Migration and Citizenship Service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Armenia.
She also noted that citizens can apply for a new biometric passport at any time. Upon receipt of the new passport, the citizen's previous passports will be invalidated, as a person cannot hold more than one passport at a time.
As Nelly Davtyan noted, a biometric passport will not simply mean that the document will be on an electronic device (chip). The Republic of Armenia has already begun the process of signing the document in the ICAO Special Purpose Toolkit, which facilitates the exchange of security data on digital passports between countries. This "trust network" allows other countries to quickly verify the authenticity of documents crossing borders, improves the security and speed of border control, and facilitates the international movement of citizens.
As a reminder, the design of the new biometric passport has already been presented, and its implementation will begin in the fall of 2026. A red biometric passport will replace the blue one.
